In what can be termed as a bad news, doctors say a young Indian woman who was gang-raped on a bus in New Delhi has died at a hospital in Singapore.
The horrific ordeal of the woman galvanized the whole nation, with demonstrations being held on a daily basis to demand greater protection from sexual violence that impacts thousands of women daily, but which often goes unreported.
Going back to the incident, she and a male friend were traveling in a public bus on December 16 evening when they were attacked by six men who raped her and beat them both. Even worse, they also inserted the rod in her body, stripped both naked and threw them off the bus on a road.
Police have arrested six people in link with the attack and they are all remanded in custody.
The Indian government responded to days of violent protest at the attack by promising to make public the names, photographs and addresses of convicted rapists.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said: ‘The issue of safety and security of women is of the highest concern to our government.’
