MUMBAI: Movie star Salman Khan must appear before the Maharashtra Women’s Commission in Mumbai next week, the agency said today, after angering fans, the public, activists and others by stating that training sessions for his new film made him feel like a “raped woman”.

“We have summoned him on June 29 at 2 pm. He is a celebrity. People look up to him and he should have been more responsible,” Vijaya Rahatkar, the chairperson of the state commission.

His offensive comment was made during media interviews over the weekend to promote the film “Sultan“, in which he plays a professional wrestler, and which will release on Eid.

“It is the most difficult thing,” the 50-year-old actor told on Saturday when asked about his training schedule. “When I used to walk out of that ring, it used to be like a raped woman walking out.” The remark, which initially went unnoticed, sparked outrage on social media.

Mr Khan has not offered comment on the controversy, though his father, noted screen-writer Salim Khan, apologised yesterday on his behalf. Brother Arbaaz Khan said the actor’s “intent was not wrong” and appeared to suggest that the analogy to “a raped woman”, though poor, should be considered as one would the expression “work like a donkey”.

Last year, a Mumbai court overturned Mr Khan’s conviction in a 13-year-old hit-and-run case in which he was accused of running over a homeless man. The matter is now in the Supreme Court.

In 2007, Mr Khan was jailed for nearly a week for shooting an endangered gazelle on a hunting trip in Rajasthan.
